Coping with Stress: The Messages We Give Ourselves

I just finished a wonderful class on the power of our words.  Since then, I have been thinking about the words we use and direct towards ourselves.

The words and self talk we use, affect how we view ourselves and the world around us.  These words have great power and influence the beliefs we have.

Observe the self talk:

  • What are you saying to yourself?
  • What do you believe about yourself?

All this self-talk is normal  and has a profound affect on how we deal with stress.

The words and messages we repeat to ourselves are being fed into our subconscious.  The subconscious takes in what is being said and accepts it without question.

We have a choice whether the words are positive or negative, constructive or destructive.  The words we use will promote either self-esteem or self-doubt.

Try to become more aware of the words you use and direct towards youself:

  • Listen to what you are saying to yourself.
  • Do those words demonstrate self-respect, love and acceptance?
  • Or are the words negative, promoting feelings of unworthiness.
  • What is it that you really believe about yourself?

The Bad News is: Many of us use negative self-talk.

The Good News is: We can change the words.

Remember the subconscious is a fertile ground, taking in words and turning them into beliefs.  We do have a choice about what words we are planting.

So here is something to try:

  • Everyday, think about what you want for yourself.
  • Everyday, think about how you want to see yourself.
  • Everyday, make a decision about those words you are using and directing towards yourself.
  • If you want goodness and joy in your life, say that-  “My life is goodness and joy.” or “I am open to goodness and joy in my life.”
  • If you want to improve self-esteem, say that- “I am worthy.” or “I love, respect, and accept myself as I am.” or “I am open to loving myself as I am.”

It’s not easy to change self-talk, but we do have the power to stop the negative and replace it with positive.

Try it and let me know what you think.  Please feel free to email me at: kate@relaxandbreathe.com

Enough for now.

Take care,

Kate
